Mosques are experienced through more than architecture. Sound shapes how we pray, connect and belong.
Sensing the Sacred Through Sound is an interactive workshop exploring the role of sound in Islamic tradition and mosque design. Through presentations, discussion and participatory activities, participants reflect on how listening influences worship, wellbeing and community life.
During the workshop, you will:
- Explore sacred sound in the Qur’an, Sunnah and everyday practice.
- Reflect on the sounds that shape your spiritual life.
- Compare different mosque sound environments through illustrated design scenarios.
- Take part in a guided listening walk and create your own sound map.
- Develop practical ideas to improve the sonic experience in mosque spaces.
Who is it for?
The workshop is open to anyone interested in mosque design, Islamic architecture, community wellbeing, design research or the relationship between faith and space. No previous design experience is required.
